  1. Any of your buddy's reload? Mine do---so I just bought a set of dies. Used his scale, press, etc. Plus you also have a mentor----helps you learn the ropes. As far as dies & equipment. I would stick with RCBS-----good stuff at a fair price.
  2. Kathleen, Can a successful hunter donate the meat? I know all the meat has to come out----but after that can I donate to a local family for their winter supply? Flying home a moose would be pretty pricey. CB
  3. My nephew is coming out this Oct for his 1st elk hunt. I do it up right with a wall tent, wood stove----at the edge of the wilderness area @11,000'. It's a real elk camp & hunt. Anyway, last weekend I took out the Savage 99 & shot it. I was planning on him using it, he's from Ohio, he doesn't have a deer rifle cause it's shotgun only there. Why the Savage 99 has a following is beyond me-----kicks like a mule, has a trigger like a Mac truck's clutch. When to my buddy's store----he had a very little used Ruger 77 in a 30/06. Picked it up today for $350, it's a Mark II. Put a Pentax 3x9 on it. Looks good----Plan on shooting it this weekend. I also use a 30/06----that way we can use the same ammo, Federal 180 grain Nolser Partitions. CB
  4. doubleA----wildcat 270-08-----That would be a 30/06, I believe--CB
  5. 308 is a short action, the 270 is a long action. The 308 is about the equal of the 30/06. Either one will work for what you want to do. Lots of deer, elk, antelope have be killed with each of them. If you like the 270 get it-----it will be just fine out here in the west. Quite a few of my buddies use a 270. CB
  6. Flyer------Give it another 20 years. Pretty sure you'll see where I'm coming from. The grizzly------It can bite back, if that makes sense. I've done everything DIY----bighorns, mtn goat, elk, black bear, deer. Hunted moose & mtn lion with outfitters. No one, I mean no one had the passion that I did. Hunting was my life. Something happens when you hit the 1/2 century mark-----maybe you can start seeing the end of the trail? Things just change. CB
  7. TX-----Do you think there is an difference on applying online verses US mail. Seems like to me I have better luck via the US mail route. I'm sure it's the all the same. But like a ball player-----I respect a streak & don't screw with it. CB
  8. If I'm going to buy a new gun-----It will be a RUGER. :) CB
  9. Good job, We got 4' of snow here. No tee shirts for awhile. CB
  10. I use a full mask from Quaker Boy. It has a band for the eye openings. My wife has a cap with the face mask sewn in----that way she always knows where it is. Both work, very well. CB
  11. I had a 10X for about 15 years----finally gave out. The cloth around the snaps mostly. I bought one at Wal-mart last spring. $20 it's OK. The one thing I like about it is it's a mesh-----no trapping heat from the long hikes chasing these Colorado Merriams. CB
  12. AI------Get the Swift A frame & don't look back. It's as good bullet as is out there. Same basic idea as the Nolser. You that load your good to go for anything in NA except maybe the Big Bears in AK. CB
  13. WY has preference points for Bison? I thought it was just luck of the draw.
  14. You have been drinking too much "Kool-Aid". The was in Afgan is about finding & killing Al-qaida. The was war in Iraq is NOT, it is Bush's. They were not Iraq, Bush1 & Clinton has Saddam bottled-up---with the no fly zone & blockades. Bush WANTED to invade. He & the neo-conservates made the case for weapons of mass destructions. They got what they wanted from the facts, twisted it & had reason for the war. They knew & lied in about the "yellow cake" in the state of the union address just before the war.
  15. Steve, your entitled to your opinion. Answer your own question---Are you better off now than when Bush took office? Answer is a resounding NO. We went to heck in a hand basket under him. As far as if Gore or Kerry would have been better or worse----Who knows. But it would have been different. I voted for W the 1st go round but not the 2nd. I was around for Jimmy. Best one in my liftime-----from JKF to present. Most are mediocre. Obama has a big hole to come out of----We all better hope he does well. CB
  16. I usually don't post on a thread about politics, But I have on this one. George W is the worst president in my lifetime. I'll be glad when 1/20/09 comes. CB
  17. It's some of the hardest hunting there is. Just try to keep up--when they are hot on the trail. Been on mtn lion hunt------it's plenty tuff. CB
  18. Anyone else losing the fire in the belly. I'm almost to the point of not having any hunts that I have to do. If that makes sense. Years back, I had to bear hunt, got into baiting-----had them coming in real good. Then it was sheep hunting---I became a sheep nut. I was on 4 sheep hunts in 6 years. Now, if I get drawn in Colorado great----but I don't put in for other state tags like I use to. Then it was moose----got a nice bull a few years ago---now it looks like alot of work after you pull the trigger. Been to South Africa, it's OK. I'll go back-----I liked Kuger Park better than the hunting. I elk hunt ever year but it's more for the camping & see elk. Than it's about pulling the trigger. But I still pull the trigger cause they are good eatin. I got a nice 300 class bull-----I shoot cows now, much better eatin. Have a great spot on the river for ducks----but I hardly go anymore. I love to see them come in----but after you shoot them you have to clean them & then you have to cook & eat them. Thought about a DIY caribou hunt-----more I think about it----rain, bugs, backpacking----more it sounds like work than fun. About the only hunt I WANT is a interior grizzly. But for the price I could get a new F150. Guess I'm getting old & gray. I'm liking camping, poking the campfire, long hikes, barBQ ribeyes over the coals---more & more. Thanks for listening, CB
  19. He was over-rated. He had complete control of the Broncos. He could not draft anyone----everyone was a bust. After Elway, he got Griese, then Plummer, now Cutler. His defensive coordinator was a revolving door. He had 3 more years on his contract & it was worth 20 million. Guess he has a monster house in Denver----35,000 square feet. What a heating bill !!
  20. 4 years for receipts. 7 years for income tax forms. After that----it's into the fire. CB
  21. I think I'll pass. My uncle was in the Battle of the Bugle-------Hard to watch a Nazi film. I'll stick with "Band of Brothers", if I want a WWII movie. CB
  22. It's that ime of the year. Looks like I'll get out of the NM bighorn sheep draw. If memory serves me right, the tag is $3500. To much to send into the state for them to hold. That's a South African plains game package hunt. CB
