  1. Yep! Living in an environment where these animals are hunted by many other things besides humans sure makes those animals wary. A couple other factors that make it tough are these animals typically stay in herds. So you rarely have only two eyes and one nose to worry about. Most of the trophy sized antelope species there have been alive for twice as many years as a trophy sized whitetail. That's a long time for an animal to learn how to survive!
  2. I've been waiting for this thread. Nicely done Al! Hope some of the advice I gave you paid off. Nambia is known for having the most Gemsbok. They are also notorious for being tough to get with a bow. Congrats on yours. You got some nice animals. I bet you also have an itch to return!
  3. I need my SC license and a non-resident Alabama license. Besides that, the only thing I really need is a new backup BRIGHT flashlight. I lost my spare last year. My Surefire Nitrolon G2 serves me well most of the time. I've got the P-60 lamp in it which eats batteries at a much slower rate than the P-61 lamp. The P-61 lamp is almost twice as bright but it chews up two expensive Lithium Cells in just 20minutes! I always carry spare batteries. I learned the hard way one year that isn't good enough! One moonless evening I was making my way out of the swamp and the lamp unit failed on my flashlight! New batteries can't fix that! I was stuck in the swamp in total complete darkness. Luckily I was able to reach a friend on my cell and he drove to the edge of the swamp and shined his headlights towards me. I was barely able to make out his lights. That was a long walk in the dark heading towards two headlights. Since then I've always carried two lights. So yes, I feel I really NEED a new flashlight. The one I'm looking at is a BlackBear Bear Cub. The price of the light includes a battery charger. Which means it is much more economical than similar class lights. It's not just the fact the charger is included, you also don't have to buy expensive one time use 123As! These lights use Maglight flashlight housings which are readily available. They also sell spare and replacement parts for their lights. In short I'll be able to keep this light working for a long long time. Welcome to Black Bear Flashlights

  5. It might not be me. Even though our season opens Aug 15th. Sometimes it's just too brutally hot to hunt opening day. If it's in the low 90's I'm a threat. But when the temps are over 100 and the heat index is 115+ that's simply too much for me to take. Crazy isn't it? I hope it's around 90 opening day so it'll be cool enough to hunt :surrender:
  6. Eland make great Euro Mounts. I think the world record was taken in Namibia. This was the animal I felt I was absolutely the luckiest to get. Eland do not need to drink water! They can get all the water they need from the food they eat. They will drink but they don't have to. They are also notorious for only drinking at night when the moon is bright. You may or may not get a chance at one. Good luck!
  7. When you are out of wall space. Pedestal mounts are a wonderful thing. The mounts on the left and right are secured to the top of the dresser. I built stand for the eland skull and now it's sitting on top of the dresser instead of leaning on the wall. Here is the setup with the new stand.
  8. From left to right. Limpopo Bushbuck, Eland and Nyala.
  9. Yeah I had to go with the euro-mount on the Eland. Eland are absolutely enormous animals! The euro-mount takes up as much space as a good sized whitetail shoulder mount! Absolutely the heaviest animal I've ever taken with bow and arrow.
  10. Got a call today that a package was gonna be delivered from Coppersmith. The guy says, "I'm 10 minutes away are you gonna be home?" I said, "Bring it!" Got the stuff uncrated and set up. Trophy Service in RSA did a great job on my stuff. I'm very impressed. I would definitely use them again.

    Copperhead?

Yep it certainly was a copperhead. And you are thinking right about not killing the non-poisonous snakes around the house. Not killing the non-poisonous snakes around helps keep the poisonous ones out. Even if the non-poisonous snake isn't a snake-eater they often share the same foods as the poisonous snakes. If the non-poisonous snakes are eating all the food in the area the poisonous ones have no reason to move in. Even garter snakes eat some of the same things as copperheads.
  12. I'm sorry you had an issue with a part failure but please take heed of the following. On the draw stops of "Binary" type cams, it's a good idea to use the blue "non-permanent" loctite. You don't want them to move, EVER. The draw stop positions are extremely important to these systems! When you have upper and lower cam draw stops, on a binary system, take care to make sure they are in the exact same position on each cam. If they are in different positions, both stops will often still bottom out at max draw. When this happens the cams are starting out, out of timing. This causes an imbalance that is impossible to tune out. (ei. your bow shoots like crap!) Make absolutely sure you put the new draw stop in the exact same position as the other cam when you get it! I've personally tuned bows that were "un-tunable" because of this very issue. Match the draw stop positions and voila the bow tunes easily!

    Good Bass today

Yep! Any fish in front of my 6' 5" frame that looks big most likely is. They were at 12ft for us Hutchies. Slow but consistent. We caught 15.

    Good Bass today

The bass just weren't working the top so we decided to try Texas Rigged worms in deeper water. It was stained water so I went with a Hot Pink Gulp worm. That was the magic combo. This was the best one I caught today. Weighed 7 1/2lbs on the Boga Grip. This bass was really skinny but long! Released her unharmed.
  15. Ok not going to try that one! One question though. If you are gonna use fast food burgers as an ingredient, wouldn't it be easier and acceptable to use pre-cooked bacon? DUH!
  16. Are you planning to try a zebra steak at Joe's Beerhouse in Windhoek? That's a famous stop for hunters in Namibia.
  17. I use diamondback serving. Wrap once one overhand knot, wrap around to the backside one overhand knot, come back to the front one overhand knot, around back one last time and TWO overhand knots to finish. Trim it close and carefully melt the ends of the serving with a lighter.

    Shaving equipment.

I just rub a bar of Ivory Soap on my face in the shower and shave with a Gillette Mach 3. Takes me about 1 min. I had a beard one year but for me shaving every day is easier to deal with.

  21. You won't be able to get all three Hepatitis B shots before you leave. The first two need to be a month apart and the third six months after the second. Go ahead and get the third one after you come back and be immunized for life. Otherwise you have to run through the first two again if you decide you want to go back. (You will ) Dries Visser runs a respected outfit, I expect you will be treated well!
  22. Good luck Al. Got all your shots yet? If you are not hunting a malaria free zone remember you need to start taking the anti-malarials BEFORE you leave and for awhile after you get back. If they are anything like what I've experienced they will feed you well! If you can get it when you are there be sure to try the gemsquash. All the game meat I had there was outstanding. I'm not a wine drinker but some of the best wine in the world comes from South Africa. The very toughest critter to get with a bow in my opinion is the Zebra. Two kinds of Zebra in Namibia Plains and Mountain. If you get an opportunity don't turn either down (especially a mountain zebra)! Kudu and Gemsbok are darn wiley too. Both Impala and Warthogs are superb string jumpers. Make sure they are well relaxed before you launch an arrow!

    Can't read PM

Yep, same problem. Thread subscriptions aren't working either.
