  1. Got back from Texas 2 weeks ago and had Rios(about 30-35 of em) come every single day to the feeder. They would chase off the whitetail and the Axis. Watching them go about their business put me in Turkey mode. Too bad their season wasn't open yet. I got to learn a few new sounds that I never heard Eastern birds do and some great video of turkeys being turkeys. The Boss Tom never broke strut. My son Joe will be off to the Hill Country of Texas on St Paddy's weekend to shoot a Rio tom. Hope he nails that Boss.
  2. Sorry Tim that is a little too far for me. Too bad you won't have your annual Axis backstrap dinner . Say Hi to Gruber and Millis also for me. Have a safe trip and I hope the show goes well.
  3. Yuuup...That is a good group. Looks like you put all the parts in the right place when you built that one . What is the twist for the Adams Arms upper? What does the ammo cost for the 6.8? Do you reload? I was considering another caliber for my new AR platform. The 300ACC Blackout is like $2 or more a round. The .50 Beowolf...you can't get uppers or ammo for it. The same with the .450 Bushmaster and the .458 SOCOM. I was leaning towards the 6.8 like you have or the .204 Ruger. Any info appreciated.
  4. Welcome to Realtree . I also saw that piece on 60minutes regarding the exotics in Texas. Not badly written and it didn;t make the ranchers looks bad. I just so happen to have spent some time in Texas' Hill Country a few weeks ago and made a few contacts. Been going there the last 5 years for Axis deer and hogs. All free range. Call this place...This is Exotic Wildlife association. They should to be able to connect you to a rancher that holds those type hunts. Exotic Wildlife Association If that don't work for you, I have a taxidermist/meat processor in Kerrville area that might be able to steer you to a ranch for the Oryx you speak of....and one last resort. A close friend who has a ranch and raises exotics(not Oryx) and whitetail himself in the Ingram area...All in Texas. Good Luck.

    Good News

You are one tough motorscooter Steve. I hope your healing continues and you never look back at Cancer again. Continued prayers.
  6. Ross...You get better and better each year. I cannot thank you enough for your hard work and effort going into this event. The simple fact that the knife is one of yours makes it heavily desirable. Couple that to the material it was crafted with and where that material originated...You have a tremendous rare collectible piece of artwork. I have to tell ya...the way your name came up at our monthly meeting was all I needed to know how small this world really is. Since I proudly said I knew you, I got the assignment to get you what you needed to make this happen. Like always Ross. You made it happen...again. Folks...in this current political climate. It is more important than ever to make sure you/we keep alive the things we love and enjoy. Hunting and gun ownership seem to rank right up there with most of us. I am sure your county has a Friends of the NRA event happening somewhere by you. Attend these events if you can. All the money raised at these events goes right back into promoting and preserving our gun rights in your county or state. Ross thank you so much for your generosity and skills. I will keep everyone here in the loop on how well that knife does at the event. I have no doubt it will the most sought after item at the event. Happy Birthday Ross.
  7. Very nice Ross...VERY nice. The Mrs sure knows how to make ya happy huh? Happy Birthday bud. Looking forward to the pics.
  8. St. Raymonds Ravens...Orange and Black uniforms
  9. I grew up around the salt water of the Long Island sound fishing most of my childhood. I thought that was my first love...Until I heard the sound of a gobble at 6am! Hunting...all the way. Fishing is what I'll do when I'm not hunting.
  10. It just amazes me that judges who make decisions, regarding these issues have thier head in the sand. They do not pay any attention to facts. Their decisions should be based on fact...not politics. It hurts even more to think the current whitehouse administration welcomes and legitimizes these nuts!
  11. Congrats on the new rifle. I think the Vanguard takes the same bases as the Remington700. Those are the weaver bases I put on my Vanguard. Weatherby makes a dang good rifle for the price. I see you also got a sub MOA one also. Niiiice! Have fun with it.
  12. Some of you guys live in some beautiful places with lots of space. I am envious. We are all packed in on 1/3acre parcels. I live 40 miles north of NYC. Out the front door left and right. This is what made me buy this house, no one behind me...Lots of woods behind us to bowhunt and a stream that is stocked by DEC that I can trout fish in.
  13. People who race to the interesection(light or stop sign), making it look as though they are going through, making you slow down or stop to avoid collision and then they stop abbruptly.
  14. I agree that is pretty crazy. I have worked at some unusual hieghts, but never at those elevations. The highest I have ever climbed was 460' to install the necklace lighting on the JFK/TriBoro bridge. We had to be clipped on with our harness' at all times. Matter of fact we had two teathers attached to our harness'. Before you disconnected one you had to attach the other. Hieghts don't bother me...its widths :clown:
  15. There are 3 species that are just about extinct in their native countries, but are thriving in Texas. These are the Scimitar Horned Oryx, The Dama Gazzelle and the Addax. Animal right activists have won the right in a long dragged out court battle to stop the hunting of these endangered animals(in their own country) in the US. It has been because of the US and Texas breeders that these animals all together have not...I repeat...have NOT become totally extinct throughout the world. Now canned hunts are not my thing, but some of these ranches that host these hunts, are 10,20 or even 50,000acre ranches. Which by no means is a slam dunk kill. But folks want to do this kind of hunting and I will support it. Hunting these animals provides a financial incentive to the ranchers to propogate these species. Hunters provide the demand for more of these animals to be bred. I remind you that Texas, has sent many many animals back to areas where they were used to repopulate/reintroduced areas where they once roamed. These animals flourish here in the USA. The animal rights folk think it should not be hunted at all here in the US...Even though it is the hunters dollars that have kept these species flourishing here. There was a piece done on 60 minutes regarding this issue. Check it out. Can hunting endangered animals save the species? - 60 Minutes - CBS News I was wondering what some of you guys thought about this subject. If the animal is a non native specie, it is considered invasive. This is always what these endangered animals were considered and were allowed to be hunted on private land like all other exotic animals. The USFWS has goten involved and will be putting a stop to the hunting/killing of these antelope here in the US where they are thriving. What say you?

    hello

Welcome to Realtree Justin. This is a great place for knoledge. The Outdoors is all what we love here so you will fit right in. I think we have a member on this board who is stationed in Okinawa. BTW...Thank your Dad for his service.
  17. We use gobble shakers when we can't get birds to gobble or when they get tight beaked. We hunt only private land in NY's Catskill mts. So we don't feel uneasy about using a gobble call. Some heavy cuttin and gobbles always seem to work.
  18. Yeah... all along the Pallisades Pky up to Exit 5. Some monster gobblers too I see everyday on the way home to NY along the Pallisades.
  19. Now it is a good yote. I'd say thats a 50+lber! Congrats!
  20. I have to agree with Mike here on this one. Let the area sit a while and calm down. 2 weeks or so. Then go back and place your cam, be scent conciuous. You should be back in biz getting pics soon enough.
  21. Have a blast Lewis. Soak up those suns rays as much as you can. You will be back with the snow and ice soon enough.
  22. Ahhh... the old heel spurs eh John? I had em...got the shots( 2 of em) in my heel, got good boot insoles(Spenco) and got fitted for orthodics. Since then no heel issues at all. Cortisone shots can work wonders. But be careful. Stretching is soo important for old guys who are falling apart
  23. Even though hogs are not considered big game. We as hunters owe it to the animal to dispatch it as quickly as possible. I think these new air guns bring quick death to the table here. I have always been led to believe that in order to kill deer/hog sized game cleanly. One needs a gun capable of producing 1000/ftlbs of energy at 100 yards. These new air guns must provide this. I don't know how with such light pellets as opposed to bullets. But they can kill just as a powder powered cartridge can. Airguns are good in urban environments.

    Wow...

    Happy Belated Birthday Ruth.
