what you all think about a 20ga for turkeys
colorado bob replied to hunter109's topic in Shotguns & Accessories
Number 6 shot. 3" Federal. You want as many pellets as you can get in the 20 ga. CB -
Interested in selling off a few?
-
Did you draw rifle, black powder or archery?
-
Vote with your feet. Other stores sell nyquil.

Got mine in the mail on Thursday, got the applications sent back in Friday's mail. Sent in for moose, bighorn sheep, elk & deer. Still thinking about bear. It's not hard for me, I hunt the same units. Sheep-- unit 16 killed a ram there in 98, elk-- unit 75 hunted it since 81, deer-- high country buck unit 74, moose-- unit 6. If I go for black bear--unit 75. CB

Buckshot----No use #6's with a full choke call the bird to within 40 yards---shoot it in the head & neck. Best call----IMO get a good box call---it's the easiest to use. The best one I think for a beginner is the Lynch Model 101--"Fool-Proof". It's a one sider----you can't go wrong. I still use mine every spring---still brings these Merriams. CB

Can you bait?

Remember the lite hit I had this past elk season. I just got back from the range where I had the same problem. If I put the shell into the chamber or half way in----close the bolt---I'll have a lite hit. If I put the shell into the magazine & let the bolt pick it up---it will fire. Tried both factory & handloads----same results. Gun is about 5 years old, original owner, nothing done to it-----just like it came from Finland. It's had a couple hundred rounds thru it. Just about all were factory Remington. Any ideas. CB

Save the money & go on a hunt for one of those critters. You 270 will be just fine. If I had it all to do over again----I would be a one rifle guy & go on hunts all over the place. I would also forget all the taxidermy work----take a ton of photos. I've got enough in mounts to pay for a cape buffalo hunt. Back to your question---I don't think you will be gaining much by getting the 300 WSM or the 300 Win Mag over what you already have. CB

Well it's that time of year. I'm going to apply for a bighorn sheep & a high country buck tag. I've got enough preference points, I could draw if the stars & moon are in the correct phase. Time to get back to the gym. I do the same thing every year. Start back up in January & if I draw really hit it hard. If not ---stick to it till summer then go firewood cutting, back packing, hiking till elk season. Felt good tonite to hit the gym. I'm sure it's the endorfins, sweating out the toxins, plus drinking a lot of good old H2O. Anyway less computer time & more gym time for me. Hope I draw that sheep tag:clap: CB

I've got a Redfield 16-45x60. I really like it. used it on a couple sheep hunts & a mtn goat hunt here in Colorado. IMO anything over 45 is a waste---the heat mirage drives me nuts. Don't go cheap----you get what you pay for in optics. An eye strain headache is not fun deal at all. As far as Nikon----I've got a 6X Nikon Monark rifle scope I like. I use it on my Tikka 30/06 for elk hunting. Cabela's use to have a try it & if you don't like it send it back for a full credit--minus the freight. Maybe that is only on the Cabela's brand----doesn't hurt to ask. Remember it's going to last you a lifetime be happy with it. CB

Is everything tite on the bases & rings. Sand bags for a rest. Is the barrel heating up?

Hi, Andy. Nice bull you got over there in Utah. Saw the photo over at Monstermuleys. Merry Christmas-----CB
-
Yes-----hunt as often as you can. CB

Any thoughts on the conviction of the former speaker of the house---Tom Delay?
-
Nice bull-----Are you using the gutless method on that bull? CB

db---It was not directed at you but at me. There is still a sore spot with me & Steve. I've hunted out here since 77. Been on 4 sheep hunts, 1 mtn goat & elk for the past 33 years. I've NEVER adjusted for altitude. But I don't shoot at 1000 yards----That's over a 1/2 mile. I don't even know what the hold over for my 30/06 at that distance. I doubt if there is even enough energy at the range to kill a bull. 300 yards is about my cut-off. Guess I should have clarified my original post to REASONABLE & RESPONSIBLE shots.

I've got a 4X Nikon Monarch. I'm thinking of putting it on my 375 Ruger. The scope is a 40 MM and is very clear & bright. I'm a little concern with the recoil issue. Or should I keep an eye out for a good used Leupold. CB

None. I had a buddy come from Long Beach, CA this elk season. He was 2" high @ 100 yards in CA & the same here in Durango. We hunted at 11500. He killed a bull @ 230 yards. CB

I like the traditional style bases. The Nikon will be a little bit brighter being a 40mm. Be sure the rings are high enough for the 40 mm scope. I'm assuming this is going on the 308 Remington Semi-Auto. Are you making this a deer/elk rifle. I've got the traditional style bases on my Model 700-----never had a problem with it in the past 30 years. CB

snubby's are not fun to shoot. Got rid of mine. CB

OK, here's the deal. I've never had this happen to me before in my 40 years of hunting. I had a nice 4 point bull @ 50 yards on opening AM. I was ***** footing down the old logging trail headed to my buddy because I heard him shoot at first light. I round a bend & there was the bull elk.. I get down on my butt, elbows on knees, cross hairs between his front shoulders----front on shoot. I squeeze---CLICK. Jack that shell out & chamber another-----to late, he's gone. I look at the cartridge, the firing pin has hit the primer. To me it looks like about 60% of a dent than other fired shells. The rifle is a 6 year old Tikka. The ammo is new Remington factory loads-----180 grains. The only thing I can think is either it's a bad shell. But it looks like a light hit to me. I start then playing with the gun. Hopefully, I can explain this so you can understand. When the gun is on safe, the bolt will have a little play. It can open just a little then it hits the spot where it go no more. But at that point, I can still get the safety off & the gun will dry fire. The bolt then drops back down as I dry fire. Will this drawn some energy from the firing spring causing a "light" hit on the primer? This could of happened as I got the gun off my shoulder. Bolt got hung up on my day pack, jacket etc. Got the safety off & then CLICK. The weather was in the 30's---so cold weather didn't gum up any old oil the the bolt. Bolt is the same it came from Finland. It never has given a hint of trouble before. I shot about 30 rounds thru the gun about 2 to 3 weeks before the season, siting in & practice. Got any opinions? CB

The aspens are golden, the peaks have a dusting of snow, the 30/06 is 2" high @ 100 yards. I've got an elk tag in my pocket. Season opens Saturday. Headed into the high country tomorrow. :) See you in a week. CB

My only suggestion----shoot her close to the road or a place where you can get a tractor to her. Them things are BIG. CB
