Re: Who claims the buck In a case like that, you did the right thing with taking the deer and not claiming it. That deer was going to die anyway, he might not have found it that day but probably would have later found the carcass. In the case of the deer just being wounded in the leg or brisket and still bleeding, but not fatally, then you making the kill shot on it, it yours. I had the same thing happen to me about 10 yeas ago while rifle hunting in GA. I heard my buddy shoot and about 30 minutes later Ihad three Does come out and start feeding, I hammered all three. I got up to th ethird one it had three holes in it. I standing there in a stuper looking at this deer. I knew where my shot hit her but for thelife of me couldn't figure out how this third hole got there. When another one of my friends hsowed up we were standing there trying to play CSI on this deer when I here my friend coming from below us walking real slow. He's following a blood trail, I yell at him I got three deer, he ask if one has got a hole in it all ready. He said he gut shot a big Doe, BAM! There the third hole mystery, my bullet wass recovered fromt he off shoulder since it didn't make it through her. His first shot would have killed her so I gave the deer to him, I just finished her off. If he'd shot her low in the front or back leg, or forward in the brisket, she would have been mine. These aren't fatal shots in deer and they usually servive. Bottom line-you did right and congrats to you!

Your most embarassing moment this bow season?
Straight Shooter replied to KSBOWHUNTER's topic in Bowhunting
Re: Your most embarassing moment this bow season? Opening day of bow season, after the morning hunt of only seeing one deer. I change stands for the evening hunt, about 5:15 her comes four Does. I felt like a rookie my blood was pumping so fast through my viens. I shoot the lead Doe and watch her pile up about 50 yards out. Cool, I thought! Then all heck breaks loose about 15 minutes later. I had to put myself between a feeding area and a bedding area. I've got deer coming from all around me and six or so all ready made into the field n front of me. I'm supposed to be a very well composed bowhunter keep in mind! LOL I look to my left here comes a dandy 8 point in full velvet, I watch him come in frm 70 yards out. Wlks right under my tree and I choke big time, hit him through the brisket. I'm really shook now. 15 minutes later here comes a Doe and two more small bucks. I draw on the Doe at 17 yards and let'er fly, I got her dead to rights. Until my bow string catches my harness strap on my left side and sends the arrow about six feet above her back. Now, I've shot three times within one hour and 15 minutes and I've still got an hour an a half of shooting light left and deer still in the field and more coming from the woods. I can't take anmore and have tog et down, I was about to fall out of the tree from nerves being shot and not deer. LOL Then I have to go back to camp and tell my friend that loves to ride me like a horse when I mess up! After his sides quit hurting from laughing at me, we made dinner and got ready for the next days hunt. Big taste of humble pie on opening day! -
Re: Feeding area\'s or Bedding area\'s ?? Your hunting over a some good feeding area's. not only look for the droppings of deer, but take a closer look around and you'll see busted up hulls of the acorn's and acorn piece's. Deer are sloppy eaters and with a good mast crop they won't be to picky on getting the tid bits they drop. With a big Oak flat like your discribing, you can beat there is a thicket close by within a couple of hundred yards or so, maybe closer. If I was you I'd have that as one of my hunting spots every season with good mast crops.

Re: Broadheads Try either of them with your new set-up. I'm sure you'll get good results out of either, but I prefer fixed over mechancials anyday. JMO

Re: My first archery deer. That's to funny and I know it frustrating, I've had it happen to me before. Congrats on the Doe and she looks just like mine in the freezer! Great visual! LMBO

Re: New Muzzy Man If you use them, they will eat! LOL I've used them on both.

Re: Arrow question Cool, I bet your excited. I can't wait to go on my first bear hunt, that is probably a couple of seasons down the road, though.

Re: Got me a Mathews Enjoy the new bow........ On another note, there's not one bow more inferior than another one, it's all n the preference of the user. I'm not biased to one or the other, I just go with what I like. JM2cents.

Re: Everyone\'s first buck. Very nice buck and congrats on it being your first! You'll be on cloud nine for a long time. I can remember mine I got. I've still go it on the wall, it's a small six pointer I got in Alambama. I was on a one week bowhunt with nine other guys in my group. I was the only who hadn't kill a deer with a bow. The first orning of the hunt I took my six pointer 10 minutes after daylight. I took the big buck pot as well as the big doe pot for the week! I was stoked and been addicted to bowhunting ever since.

Re: Deer Dogging?? I know it's different styles of hunting and if it's legal in that state to do, hunters are going to do. I've never done it, but I don't condon people who do. yes, it might disrupt my hunting area for a while, but hey, it happens even with people walking through the woods. Grouse season is in during deer season and hunters are running their dogs for birds, is that any different than a deer dog running through the woods? Granted they are chasing deer, but it's still a dog running every where. Let it lie! Hunters are going to hunt by there legal means of the states laws whether we like them or not. It's just something we've all got to live with as HUNTERS.

Re: Hey Mods!!!! What\'s The Deal... Sorry can't you help there.

Re: What is the difference If it's PSE and an older model, it's probably two cam. The style of cam is mainly in the decision of the shooter, some like two, some like, and some like cam and a half. They all shoot the same, just different tuning methods. Post the pictures when you can.

Re: Bowhunting big bucks: need info. I know your in Iowa, but you've got to be in an area where 150's roam. The area's you could be hunting might not hold the caliber of deer your looking for. Of course 120 to 140 is nothing to bat an eye at, but I've always heard hunt where they are and everything is else fall inplace. And a lot of LUCK.

Re: Arrow question I don't think you'll have a problem dialing it in with your set-up and good luck on your spring hunt. Let us know how you do. Also, where are you going?

Re: Bowhunters you need to read this That's insane, the artist must be a terrible bowhunter or an anti-hunter trying to hurt that Association. Either way it's bad publicity for us and wrong.

Re: muzzys They are a very good and reliable broadhead and that's is why I've stuck with them for over 14 years now. I know some situations where the hunter made a bad shot and not just using Muzzy heads, After which, they said that they are changing heads next year because it didn't kill th edeer quick enough or not all. 99.9% of the time it's not the heads fault, but it's the head behind the bows fault. We've all made bad shots as well as me, and I never wavered from Muzzy's. I did try out a different head this fall on one deer, but it was surrounded by Muzzy's in my quiver. I've taken 27 deer with my bow and all but one have been taken with a Muzzy broadhead. Other sites talk about durability, I got one head I've put through 5 deer and recovered 4 of them and it's ready to eat again for next season. All shots were pass throughs, I only changed the blades, checked the straightness on a spinner and put it back into the quiver. The one deer I couldn't find I hit her good on my side, but the exit side was back I guess and she didn't bleed much. I thought she was going to fall within 50 yards but kept going. I did make a two day effort tofind her, but no blood is hard to follow through a pine thicket. My fault not the heads.
