whoa!! it's the buck that got away!!
hoosierhunter replied to razortec_hunter's topic in Photography & Video
I would agree that I don't think that spot would be a lung shot. It looks way too low and then you take into account that you probably were up in the air and there isn't any way that hit lung. Personally I'd shoot him again if given the chance b/c your right his rack will not by good next year. His right side will be very weak -
Man I didn't even know we had that here in Indiana

Here's the scenario I was just in and what I did. I had a B&C buck running a doe out in the bean field and I also had approx. a 150+ class come into bow range. I took that shot at the 150 b/c I'm personally happy with anything that big regardless of what else I have seen around. A Buck in hand is worth 10 in the bush IMO........ -
That's at least a 140 inch deer and where I'm from that makes the state book. Good Luck!
-
For a first buck I would let the muzzy eat. It all depends on what your trying to accomplish. Personally I wouldn't shoot, but that's b/c I know what's around my area. My first bow buck was just a little 6 pointer, but I can promise I was as proud as all get out over him.

I found the "dead zone" above the vitals....

I don't think I hit brisket or back. The arrow was tracking perfect and I thought I smoked him. The only thing I can think of that is if he take a lunge forward and that I hit high just behind the lungs on that diagram. It just makes me sick because I was so careful not to take a bad shot and actually drew and let down on him twice before. I'm sure I will have more chances, the area I'm hunting is just shredded with scrapes, rubs, and trails. One additional question I have for anyone is how long should I let the ares "cool down" before hunting it again? I take extreme measures with scent control when it comes to hunting, but tramping all over the area like I did for two days makes me think I should stay out for a little bit. What do you guys think? -
Well I'd heard about it, but never knew anyone it's happened to until it happened to me last night. I had a very very very big deer running a doe all over a bean field last night so I decided to hit the horns to attempt to pull him in. Before I could get the rattle bag down another big boy came crashing through the woods to 15 yards behind me with the bag still in my hand. He shredded a tree behind me, made a scrap, then stepped to 8 yards. I couldn't get a shot there and he veared off to about 40 yards and then went out into the bean field. So I grabbed the bag and rubbed it on my leg. He froze and looked back, so I rolled the can once and here he comes again. He followed a spike back into the woods and came to a scrape at 18 yards. I couldn't draw b/c the spike was looking in my direction. He attempted to leave and I tried to draw and the spike spooked and so did the big boy. He ran into some thick brush about 30 yards away. He started to quarter away and at what I estimated to be 40 yards he stopped in a opening. I put my 43 yard pin on him and touched it off. The arrow was tracking perfect and WHACK. I thought I smoked him, but just a touch high. He ran off and disappeared. I found my arrow and it had fat on it. I had no idea how that happened b/c I thought I center punched him. We tracked him for 200 yards and then the blood stopped. I went back out today and canvased the area. All with no luck. I called the processor to ask him where I had to hit him to have fat and chunks of meat on my arrow(also no guts in the blood and my arrow did not smell bad). He explained to me that I had hit a area the size of a baseball just above the vitals and just below the spine. That's where a big bucks fat stores are at. He said had I hit farther back I would have had hit gut. He said it probably wouldn't kill him, just make him extemely sore and quite a bit smarter. Combine the fact that I ranged it afterwards and found it to be 38 yards and used my 43 yard pin and the fact that I was only about 16 feet up. The trajectory of the arrow was flat enough to pass completely through that zone and not hit anything. Talk about unlucky. He was a big 10 with kickers off of both g-2's and some other junk. I estimated him to field dress at about 225ish. I'd say he was right about a 150-160 class. It's very frustrating that this would have been my biggest buck by about 10-20 inches and also my first P&Y kill. There isn't anything I would have done different, just luck wasn't on my side. Pat

Well I had a rough one last night. I had a big 10 with kickers come in to my rattling horns. He got there so quick he was 15 yards away when I still had the horns in my hand. I couldn't get a shot, but I got him to come back in to 18 yards and again no shot. He finally gave me a chance at 38 yards. I put my 43 yard on him and let it fly. The arrow was tracking perfect and Whack. I was sure I smoked him. He ran off. I gave him 15 minutes and got down. I couldn't find my arrow. I got a couple buddies to help and immediately we found blood. We trailed him for 200 yards and then it looked like he stood for a little bit and then nothing the blood was completely gone. I checked my arrow and it was a passthrough. The arrow had fat on it along with good blood. I searched all day today and couldn't find him. I thought I hit a bit high but right on left to right. I called my processor to ask him where I could hit him to have fat and chunks of meat on the arrow. He informed me that I had hit the "dead zone". It's a area right above the vitals and just below the spine where nothing exists. I had heard about this but never had or knew anyone who had hit it. Because of the yardage and being only 17 foot up the shot was flat and completely passed through that zone. It's about the size of a baseball. I don't think I could have gotten anymore unlucky on that one. The shot looked perfect, but between me being 5 yards off with me estimate preshot and the deer dropping just a touch did me in. I'm about sick right now. The only thing that is good is that the processor said the deer will live from it. It's just sick because I would estimate him to score between 150-160 gross and probably 225 ish field dressed. It's unfortunate, but I figured I would let you all know that the "dead zone" does exist. I'll be back out this weekend trying it again. Hoosier
