  4. Twelve MIAs From Vietnam War Identified Men Died In Fierce Battle POSTED: 5:54 am CDT August 10, 2005 UPDATED: 6:57 am CDT August 10, 2005 When Army Sgt. Glenn E. Miller was listed as missing in action after a fierce gun battle in Vietnam in May 1968, his girlfriend figured he had been killed -- even though there was never any proof. Thirty-seven years later, the remains of Miller, a Green Beret, and the 11 Marines who died alongside him have been identified and returned to the United States. It's the largest group of MIAs identified from the Vietnam War, the Defense Department said Tuesday. There are still 1,815 other MIAs from the war. All the men's families have met with representatives of the Marines and Army, said Larry Greer, a spokesman for the Pentagon's missing personnel office. Five of the soldiers will be buried by their families. The others -- including Marine Pfc. Robert Lopez of Albuquerque -- will be buried as a group in Arlington National Cemetery in October. For Carol Fordahl, Miller's old girlfriend, the news brought back a flood of memories. There was the evening Miller serenaded her with his guitar from on top of her roof, the fresh cherries he mailed across the country for her birthday, the pearl ring and charm bracelet she still keeps. "I still miss him to this day," said Fordahl of Livermore, Calif. "He was an exceptional person and a really, really good friend. I think of him often." The last time Margaret Coplen heard from her brother, the Albuquerque Marine, was in a letter that arrived a few days after the military informed the family about what happened to him. In it, Lopez described being able to squeeze in a bath in a river. "He said he at least felt he was halfway clean," Coplen said. "It was in a river, so he said when he came out, he was covered with leeches. I was just crying when I had read that." Steven Fritsch of Cromwell, Conn., said the confirmation of the death of his older brother, Marine Lance Cpl. Thomas Fritsch, was "bittersweet" for his parents. "Now we don't have to wonder anymore," Fritsch said, adding that his brother would be buried Sunday in Cromwell. "Obviously now they have to bury their son, and who ever wants to do that? But at least they know he's not just missing, he actually died in battle." The soldiers were killed May 9, 1968, during a 10-hour battle on a football field-sized area along the Laotian border in South Vietnam, Greer said. They were part of an artillery platoon airlifted in to support a unit that was at risk of an attack from nearby North Vietnamese forces. In recent years, the Vietnam Veterans of America and other advocates had urged officials to excavate the site to search for the soldiers' remains, said Tim Brown of Dallas, a member of the platoon. Greer said villagers, former Vietnamese soldiers and American survivors helped investigators narrow their search to three excavations in the late 1990s before finally recovering the remains and other personal materials. Since then, they have been working to identify the remains using DNA and other forensic tools, he said. "We really feel very fortunate that we do have some remains coming home to us, and we are welcoming him home," said Brenda Scott, the sister of Lance Cpl. Donald W. Mitchell, of Princeton, Ky., who was among the recovered MIAs. Mitchell's father, Herman Mitchell, died in 1998 without knowing his son's fate. His mother, Marjorie Mitchell, is now 80 and "feels finally at peace," Scott said. Mitchell's funeral is scheduled for Aug. 27, more than three dozen years after his family prepared for it. "We've had this family plot since 1968," Scott said, "with a monument ready for him to come home." The other eight MIAs were identified as Cpl. Gerald E. King of Knoxville, Tenn.; Lance Cpls. Joseph F. Cook of Foxboro, Mass., and Raymond T. Heyne of Mason, Wis.; Pfcs. Thomas J. Blackman of Racine, Wis., Paul S. Czerwonka of Stoughton, Mass., Barry L. Hempel of Garden Grove, Calif., and William D. McGonigle, of Wichita, Kan.; and Lance Cpl. James R. Sargent, of Anawalt, W. Va.

Busch leaving Roush, joining Penske stable NASCAR.COM August 9, 2005 02:24 PM EDT (18:24 GMT) CONCORD, N.C. -- Defending Nextel Cup champion Kurt Busch has signed to drive for Roger Penske, starting in 2007. Roush Racing announced Tuesday that Busch advised team officials that he has signed with another team commencing in 2007. Busch also requested a release from his contract for 2006. However, due to sponsor and team considerations, Roush Racing said no decision on that request will be made for an indefinite period. Rusty Wallace, driver of the No. 2 Dodge, is retiring after the 2006 season and speculation had been rampant in recent months over who would replace him. Penske's other drivers are Ryan Newman and rookie Travis Kvapil. The 1989 Cup champion, Wallace is fourth in the point standings, 218 behind leader Tony Stewart. Busch is fifth in points, 277 behind Stewart. Busch, who turned 27 last week, was the third-youngest champion in NASCAR history when he won the title last season. Busch has 13 career Cup victories in 171 starts, with 41 top-five finishes and 72 top-10s. After running a full Truck Series schedule in 2000 and finishing second in points, Busch made the full-time jump to Cup in 2001. He won his first race March 24, 2002, at Bristol. Roush Racing, which recently announced it had signed Jamie McMurray for 2007, also has Mark Martin, Matt Kenseth, Greg Biffle and Carl Edwards in its Cup stable. However, Kenseth was upset after the McMurray announcement -- not so much that McMurray was joining the team, but rather in the way news leaked of the signing. "I just felt like being [at Roush] for eight years that they'd at least have talked to me. And [Greg] Biffle, too. He's been there seven years," Kenseth said. "So I figured they'd at least have talked to some of the guys who've been there about who you want for a teammate. "I think it happened fairly fast, and on the 42 side they leaked it to the press. So I'm sure they were probably going to talk to us before they made an announcement, but to this day nobody's still talked to me about it. So it is a little frustrating." SILLY SEASON Keep up with who's in, who's out with our Silly Season tracker. • Complete story, click here Jimmy Fennig, crew chief for the No. 97 Ford, said earlier this year that he is looking to retire after 2006. The longtime Roush employee has enjoyed a brilliant career, including a Daytona 500 win in 1988 and the title with Busch in 2004. "Probably a couple more years and that will be it for me," Fennig said in February. Fennig, 51, cited the exhausting 36-race schedule -- plus testing and non-official events -- as the reason for wanting to slow down. "I would like to be home once in awhile," Fennig said. "Being away from home all these years, you got to sit back and say, 'Time to cut back.' " Busch has a history of feuds with rival drivers -- Jimmy Spencer punched him in the nose in 2003 -- and run-ins with NASCAR officials. Earlier this year, after a tantrum at Darlington that included expletives directed at NASCAR officials over his in-car radio, Busch was placed on unofficial probation and given notice that the sanctioning body would not tolerate more bad behavior.

  12. Interesting article. Wonder how he would look in the 15? Kenseth sounds off on rising tiff with McMurray "I got a feeling he'll need me more that I'll need him in the future" By Marty Smith, NASCAR.COM August 4, 2005 10:38 AM EDT (14:38 GMT) Matt Kenseth isn't a trash-talker. Doesn't gloat. Doesn't taunt. Doesn't whine or complain. Truth told, he doesn't say much of anything, and certainly nothing controversial. So when he appeared on TNT's pre-race show from Pocono and questioned the procedure used by his Roush Racing employers in hiring Jamie McMurray, most folks were taken aback, unable to believe what they'd just heard. It seemed out of character, but Kenseth didn't care. He was frustrated. He'd learned of McMurray's hiring two weeks earlier by reading an article on NASCAR.COM, and still couldn't fathom that an eight-year tenure at Roush didn't warrant so much as a phone call for Kenseth's opinion on the matter. And the bad blood didn't help anything. After tangling at New Hampshire, Kenseth and McMurray don't like one another. Period. Kenseth publicly accepted blame for the New Hampshire wreck, which ended McMurray's day just as it began. But that was of little solace to McMurray. He was livid, and remained so through the following weekend at Pocono. "After the race last week, I just wanted to find [Kenseth] so I could punch him," McMurray said after winning the Pennsylvania 500 pole. "It would have made me feel better. It just takes time for me. I will talk to Matt, but I know if I talk to him now it won't come out right. I don't believe you should ever wreck anybody intentionally." The drivers have yet to speak to one another. Kenseth phoned McMurray after New Hampshire. The call was neither answered nor returned. Kenseth's frustration mounted. So he told the world about it. And in doing so, some folks were left with the inkling Kenseth actually might contemplate leaving Roush Racing. His contract is up at the end of the 2006 season. Unless Chip Ganassi Racing releases McMurray -- they've said they won't -- his deal starts at the outset of '07. There is potential they'll never be teammates at all. During the off week, I received more e-mails on that subject than any other, so I went to the source for answers. What I got was more insight on the situation, more information, all with the same striking candor. "It's hard to say whether I'll be there forever, but I love it at Roush and never really want to race anywhere else," Kenseth said. "It'd be pretty foolish to say you'd like to race somewhere else when I'm on the team that's running better than any other team out there." So where's the beef? "I just felt like being [at Roush] for eight years that they'd at least have talked to me. And [Greg] Biffle, too. He's been there seven years," Kenseth said. "So I figured they'd at least have talked to some of the guys who've been there about who you want for a teammate. "I think it happened fairly fast, and on the 42 side they leaked it to the press. So I'm sure they were probably going to talk to us before they made an announcement, but to this day nobody's still talked to me about it. So it is a little frustrating." That raises the question: Should Kenseth have a say? Many say absolutely not, say the decision belongs to Jack Roush and Geoff Smith and Mark Martin, and that Kenseth should keep his nose out of it. But considering the hunky-dory dynamic at Roush these days, the last thing they want to do is upset organizational chemistry in a sport where it is truly vital. "A big part to all our successes is working together," Kenseth explained. "When you have a good relationships between the drivers and crew chiefs it's a big help. "When we're running bad I can walk up to Greg and I know I'm going to get a straight answer. He's going to help me out. That's why we're successful. Everybody over there needs to remember that, as well." Initially, Kenseth carries a certain nonchalance about the McMurray situation. But get him going ... "It's fine. I'm over it," he said. "If you really watch [the New Hampshire wreck] he kind of did it to himself. He ran me over. He just really doesn't want to work things out, and the way things work at Roush that kind of deal doesn't go very far. "And I know he's not at Roush yet, but we all work really good together as a group right now, and as teammates we've gotten into tiffs before and always come to an understanding and figured things out. "So I was pretty frustrated about him never getting back to me, or being willing to work things out or talk about it." Some speculate Kenseth's frustration actually stems from his perceived standing. While Martin, Biffle, Carl Edwards and Kurt Busch are all winning races and chasing a championship, Kenseth is fighting just to keep his head above water. Is he driving lesser equipment? "We all have the same opportunity to get the same stuff and build the same cars," Kenseth said. "We do have choices about how we set up the cars and how we put the bodies on them, stuff like that. And Doug Yates gives us all awesome engines. There's definitely not an issue when it comes to getting equipment." The main issue, he says, is a futile attempt at working out a disagreement with a potential future teammate. "I didn't really have a problem when they said it was Jamie, and I don't really necessarily have a problem with Jamie," Kenseth said. "It's just that after that little thing at Loudon, I admitted it was my fault. I called him and tried to work things out and he wouldn't call me back or talk to me at the track. "He got my message. I know for sure he got it. I know he was at home. He just doesn't want to call me back. I could be wrong, but I got a feeling he'll need me more that I'll need him in the future, so that's fine. If he wants it to be that way, that's cool."

  14. Re: Speaking of Court..... [ QUOTE ] Thanks for the explanation Chuck, but I was talking aboot the Defensive Driving excuse. You just say "sorry officer, I was driving defensively." and they let you off? [/ QUOTE ] Ooohhhh, the defensive driving is an 6 hour driver safety course that you can take once a year to wipeout a speeding ticket. I assumed it was a nation wide thing. They have it now where you can go get a video and do it at home or do it online or the old fashion way of going to a class.

  16. Re: Speaking of Court..... [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Most have been taken care of with defensive driving, although the last one I got I was not able to take DD,not enough time had passed, so I went to court and got deferred adjudication. [/ QUOTE ] Care to explain all that Chuck? Is that a Texas thing? [/ QUOTE ] I assume you are talking about the deferred adjudication. That is where you go to court, pay the court cost, promise to be a good boy and not get anymore tickets for a specific time frame (6 months was mine) and then the ticket is dismissed. If you do get another ticket during that time frame, you then have to pay both tickets. Not available at all locations. This one was for the city of Houston.

  18. Re: Speaking of Court..... Don't remember the actual dates, but I got my first speeding ticket 3 days after getting my license. I was following my sister, and a state trooper pulled us both over and gave both of us tickets. That was the first one. I have had quite a few since then, too. Probably average 1 every 2 - 3 years. Most have been taken care of with defensive driving, although the last one I got I was not able to take DD,not enough time had passed, so I went to court and got deferred adjudication. The fine was about the same amount, but it, like with the DD, keeps it off of your driving record.
