Re: Turkey! Well I didn't have time to go out tonight. I'll go out tomorrow morning before classes if i'm not too tired. Should I just hang out in that area in the morning? I figure I'll try to get in there as the turkeys are maybe roosting around there....

Ok, this may seem dumb but the professor in charge of internships in the rec. department is having a meeting tonight for everyone having an internship. I guess we'll have some food and he'll tell us stuff/ I'm a social person but not social enough to enjoy going to someone's house I've never been in. I'm nervous just thinking about it. I know it'll be ok because there will be some girls there I know but still........... It is from 8:30pm-10pm, 10pm is when I usually go to bed... Going to be a late night.

So I wento ut this morning before classes to try and find some turkeys I thought I heard last night while deer hunting. didn't hear anything but found some footprints of boots, making me think the stupid neighbor was in the woods. Well I'm walking up this trail heading home when I spook a turkey. i didn't fly away, just trotted away from me into the woods. I sat there for 45m inutes until I had to leave, calling but no response. I'm planning to go back to that spot this afternoon around 4pm when I get home. Do you guys think this is a good thing to do? I think it was by itself but i'm not sure. Any tips would be appreciated.

Re: Guys, Please work your magic! Wow ,that sucks big time time ryan! The boss sure was tough about it, geesh, a little harsh if you ask me. I hope you find a job really soon, and in the meantime, more hunting if that makes your feel better.

Maybe I'm just not good with technology, but my laptop has stuff installed so I can hook up to the internet "wireless". Well we needed wireless foro ne ofo ur classes and I was just trying to figure it out. We have 2 options on the laptops: when you plug in to one of the outlets on campus, it automatically goes on the internet. Well I was messing around trying to do the wireless and now I get a box that I have to click connect to get the internet when plugged in, something I didn't do before. Argh, I hate cmputers so much! Now I'll probably have to go to the computer helpdesk tomorrow and have them fix it. With more technology comes more problems....

Re: deer liver problem How fresh was the liver? I think the meat should be fine unless you find a reason for it not to be. When the neighbors killed a deer in our woods one time(no permission to), the liver had cysts on it and looked kind of like your liver, not as bad. We eat liver but only from does and we definitely didn't eat that liver. I know what you mean by spongy, I've felt livers like that. Could be some type of liver disease problem.

Well guys, on Monday afternoon, my intramural outdoor soccer team is playing in the intramural outdoor soccer championship!! woohoo We had a game Thursday but the other team didn't have all their players so they forfeited to us then we mixed up and played for fun, it was a blast! We will probably get creamed by this team that we have nicknamed the "Barbie dolls" because they literally are a bunch of thin, girly girl players that are out just for the win instead of fun. It is nice to win, but my team and the other team would rather have fun playing. Wish us luck and that I don't get hurt, lol. this team we play will be out for blood, seriously. they play rough but being the championship, I expect them to be really rough I'll let you all know how it goes

This morning I had my first encounter with a really nice buck. Some of you probably wouldn't consider him huge, but I hunt farmland in western NY/southern tier so this is a big guy for the area. How the story goes is Andy and I leave the house at 6:30am. I hike in to one of our stands which is in the woods on an old overgrown logging trail. To the right is a maple/beech ridge and to the left is thick hemlocks/swamp that the deer like to bed in. I get in my stand around 7:00am. I have to hike close to a mile from the road through a corn field to get to the stand. Anyway about 7:45am, I hear leaves crunch to my right. I look and coming off the ridge is a buck sporting a wide rack, the biggest buck I've seen from a stand. There are a couple bigger ones I think running around also. I can't move because he looks around but keeps walking. He continues and walks right under me. I stand up as soon as he starts to walk away into a shooting lane, doesn't spook, and I draw my bow back. As soon as I do this, he bolts and stops at about 20 yards, right behind a little hemlock tree! Argh, I felt so heartbroken. He walked off into the swamp and I sat there until 10am, thinking about what a buck and what happened. The only reason I can think off is either some dirt fell off my boot or he heard my jacket when I drew back. Tonight I go out to the same stand. While walking through the field, a spike comes up, ends up stopping about 40 yards and running back in. I get into my stand and about 30-45 minutes later I hear sticks breaking and a buck grunting. I tried a few grunts on Andy's call to no avail. About 20 minutes before it started getting dark, I have another spike come right in under my stand, I thought about passing on him, then thought about shooting him, but he kind of saw me/got my sent and ran back under some hemlocks then walked off. So do you guys think I should keep hunting this stand? I am going to in the morning. I don't want to get the deer spooked out, but they are rutting like crazy here so I figurei f I spend enough time in that stand, that big boy is bound to come back...hopefully!

So I want to add maybe another class to my schedule for spring. I'm trying to decide between x-country skiing and maybe canoeing, or Initiatives(games/ropes course) and maybe just one of those above courses. I hate decisions, lol

Re: Imagine hitting a deer.... now x\'s 8!!! I hope that some of the meat was at least put to good use; it would be shame to waste all that meat. I'm glad the girl was ok, talk about scary!

So probably after graduation in May, I will be doing my internship for the outdoor rec major. It requires 200 hours or 5 weeks of 40 hours a week. When I was talking to my advisor last week, he suggested maybe looking into the Quaker Boy Game calls, which is maybe an hour or so from my house, about an internship possibility. I'm not sure where else I'd like to intern, maybe a local state park or something. I would like to do something fairly close to homse so I'm not paying for room/board. Another thing is, I'd like to possibly work this backpacking outdoor program at my college which begins in mid June, if I got hired, but I've got to do my internship first, which I don't get payed for. Anyone have any words of advice, suggestions, etc...?

I don't know if I've lost that "turkey touch" or what but things just waren't going well for me. the turkey population is down compared to what it was when I first started hunting, but of the turkeys I do know exist, I can't find them! I was out last night and slowly walked through the woods, calling once in a while and lookinf for sign...nothing. so I know where they aren't right now and I can't believe they haven't been in that field they usually are in. do you think the turkeys just found a different food source or something? I won't get home until after 5pm tonight but I will probably go out to a part of the woods which are thick hemlocks, and see if they are maybe hanging out in there....

Re: killed one in the rain Congrats and good job! I saw nothing last night in the rain, even when it let up some.

Re: Got my first turkey! Pics! Congrats! For Thanksgiving, my mom takes the turkey and lets it soak over night in a salt brine, then roasts the whole bird in the oven, no meat goes to waste, it's all good on a wild turkey!
