Re: No dice in New York Yeah ,I agree that compared to a few years ago, there is more unethical, illegal hunting practices going on in NY. I even witnessed 2 years ago a guy shoot at a heard of deer from his truck near our house and get one than take off. My momand I tried to get his license number but he took off too quick. Also our neighbors only shoot bucks and that eventually puts an imbalance in the population. I'm seeing deer but it isn't like the last 2 years where I fileld my tags in the first week. I still have my buck tag left and Andy has his DMP. Wake-up and do the math DEC.

Re: How can I keep my feet from freezing? I always have problems with my feet getting cold when sitting on stand forever. I have 2 pairs of WigWam Coolmax liners that work pretty good, they wick away moisture, then I have a pair of woolblend socks over those. Also this year I got a pair of Lacross winter boots with thick, felt like liners in them. Let me tell you my feet haven't froze in them yet. I have found that my feet do not stay warm on stand in thinsulate, not sure if not thick enough but you could try sock liners and some wool socks or a different boot or get some of those Hot hand warmer things that you unwrap and the begin to heat up. Those work great and get my feet warm even if they are frozen first

Re: Turkey Taste YES YES YES! Wild turkey is far more superior than store turkey! The flavor, the texture, everything is delicious about wild turkey! And since I haven't gotten one for a year and a half now, the next wild turkey I get will taste great! Eating a wild turkey is the best reward of turkey hunting in my opinion

Ok guys, in relation to my post, I'm sorry if I offended anyone and I hate to start fights. I understand what you all are saying. Taking a head shot at that distance is risky and if I hadn't been feeling confident to make that shot with Andy's gun, I would not have taken it. Also maye I do need more practice but bad shots sometimes happen. I do not know everything so when Andy told me that I need to compensate for the shot when high up in a tree, well I relaized that was something I didn't do not too mention there were some shrubs in the way that may have helped defelct the shot. I hate wounding deer and I always feel really bad about it but I also have to climb back in the saddle. Also I know that shooting a button buck does not allow them to grow into mature bucks but being that deer is our main source of meat, we take what comes. Also as the season progresses, our neighbors get the deer chased all over the place and it gets harder to find the deer. We all have our own opinions and ethics on hunting and I respect you all for that. I do not want to seem like some unethical hunter because unethical is what fits our neighbors and I despise that but maybe what I think ok someone might not. Anyway I apologize to all of those who replied and those who maybe didn't.

Re: Who\'s accident proned? Boy what some of you guys have had happens make me seem not injury prone. Well I'm more of the athletically injury proned. I bruised my one knee pretty good in basketball camp years ago, sprained my ankle another year while coaching at camp, I possibly have a slight meniscus tear from playing on the homeschool basketball team and intramurals at college, a slight concussion last spring playing indoor intramural soccer, a re-bruised knee playing outdoor soccer this fall, a scar from cutting myself when cutting watermelon and a scar on my knee from when I was really young and kneeled right onto the pointed end of a nail. Other than a sore knee right now, I'm fine, lol!

Re: Somewhat successful this past week Thanks for the congrats by the way Obviously you guys must think I am a qick to shoot careless hunter but I am not. Opening day I had 3 deer go right past me, 2 I would have had good shotso n but one was running and the other I didn't want to shoot in the neck through the trees. Whereas later that same day the neighbors surrounded the fields and were shooting at deer flying across the fields and they don't even have scopes on their guns. I hit that deer low because I didn't compensate for the angle of the shot, being up in a tree I needed to aim higher than I did.

Re: question for gardeners???? Well my mom knowsm ore about tomatoes than I do but you can eat green tomatos, frying or canning, I'm sure there are recipes. My mom when the tomatoes are on the vine, will put a tarp over them to keep the sun's heat in as heat is what helps the tomatos to ripen I believe. Like the others, I'd say put them in a bag and see what happens.

Well guys, here in NY it was tough hunting with snow but we did have snow for one day. I hunted morning and night all week except for Monday and Tuesday before break. Andy and I hunted from stands in the morning and did some drives in the afternoon. He saw a huge buck but had already filled his buck tag and tried pushing it towards me but no luck. On Friday evening I was set up standing on the edge of some woods, looking out into a couple fields but I also could look into the woods. He let me use his shotgun as his has more distance power than mine Anyway he was going through this swamp and 3 deer ran into the fields then ran back in the swamp, no shot. A little bit later here comes two young ones through the woods. I get my scope on one and it stops, its back towards me offering only a head shot. At about 70 yards I put the crosshairs on its head and BOOM! I thought I saw a tail go down but wasn't sure until I walked over and sure enough it was dead in its tracks! It was a little button buck but those are the best tasting On Saturday though was the bummer. We chased a spike out of the woods into some other woods. I got into another stand and Andy worked the woods below me. Here comes the spike at about 35 yards and I shoot and hit it but Andy thinks I hit it low, in the leg. All we could find was a chunk of bone and hair and 2 drops of blood, that was it! This is the same area that I hit that deer bow hunting and couldn't find it and where I hit a bug buck in the leg my first year of hunting and couldn't find it. I'm telling you, this swamp has a curse or something! Anyway I am back to classes, sadly, but I will get out again and I just heard we are getting some snow this week, yay! Man I ope to see that big buck though. I'll get some pics of my little one up soon. Good luck to the rest of you!

Re: RT Forum Members Violating Hunting Regulations I don't want to start a fight now but I have to say we are getting nit picky. I'm not saying the poaching a huge buck is wrong but if someone is in need of meat for food, I would not worry about it too much. If someone does something wrong, it is their problem and they will have to answer for it later; I think we need to mind other people's business sometimes unless they directly ask for an opinion or something. This is a great forum and as I see it right now, we are being too judgemental of others. I'm not perfect and neither are any of you. Just my opinion so don't get mad at me

Re: How\'s it going New york Yeah I got out yesterday about 3:30pm. After 20 minutes in my stand, heard one go through to my right then I saw some does in front of me about 60 yards away but it is really brushy in there by some pines so no shot. Yup I'm hoping for snow also. Doesn't seem liek Thanksgiving and shotgun season without a little snow! I remember the one year, opening day we had a horrible storm come in, rained turned to ice then to snow and really windy! I still got a buck and doe though! Good luck to everyone!

Re: Wow...amazing Thanks guys. My title ended up being "Outdoor Secrets" "A collection of nature poetry"
-
Ok guys, last week I turned a poetry anthology that we had to put together and also write a 3 page paper about in my children's literature class. I got it back today, opened it and on the score sheet I got an A and the professor wants a copy of it to use for future use in his classes! I am so shocked! Only one other time did a professor ask for a paper to use in the future and that was in my speech class last fall. Just so you know this project consister of collecting 15-20 poems and organizing them creatively and also writing a 3-4 page paper about why we chose certain poems and how it changed out mindset of poetry. Well I only have a ton of other papers due in the next couple of weeks before finals but my last day of classes before break has gone off with a bang! ( and it is shotgun season, no pun intended, lol)

Re: What I Viewed from my tower blind TODAY Umm... congrats Oneida! LOL that is all I could say. LOL @ Tominator!

So while I'm sitting here at college with an hour class to go till I get picked up to go home and go out with the shotgun, how are the rest of you NY hunters doing? Driving over to college this morning, I was so jealous to see orange in the trees and orange walking through brush, lol!! I wish we had some snow, makes the hunting more fun but I guess we won't be getting some till late in the week. Well good luck to you all and stay safe!

Re: warts on deer hide I read an article one time about deer that had warts, saw one my self actually a couple years ago. I think the article said they don't do anything to the meat. Probably similar to the wart type things that horses sometimes get. My horse has a few under his tail and on his chin but they don't interfere with my horse's functions so he's alright, lol
