My sons and I have been hunting Rockland and Sullivan counties and it was very slow in the beginning of bow. It has started to heat up around Halloween and I would say now, the peak rut is happening. Bucks are bedded with does and won't leave them until they are bred. Opening day of gun we were covered in does and small bucks. This past few days, we are lucky to have seen any deer at all. I really don't use scents much, my son swears by Code Blue. I rattle to get things going and grunt to get deer over to shooting range. We still have 2 weeks left of rifle and a week of muzzleloading. Theres time left. Where are you hunting in NY?

Got back from the incredibly frigid woods. Jeez! We woke up to 8 degree weather on Saturday morning and Sunday was no bargain either at 10. The wind was brutal. The deer sightings have went down to zero. My son sat in my doe hot spot, in the apple orchard and did not see a single deer in 4 sittings. The highlight of the weekend was the porcupine my son considered shooting. It got a pass. Most of my neighbors have tagged out and it has been a good year for most of my hunting buddies. I still have a buck tag and 2 more weeks of rifle season left to go. I am optimistic hoping to upgrade to a buck. We still have a few tags left between my 3 sons and I. Any deer taken from this point forward will be donated to the venison donation program for the homeless. Finished cutting up last Tuesday doe...MMMM will she be good eatin':) Hope everyone had a great weekend. -

Cool vids Randy...Thanks for the updates. Good Luck on a big one.

The new bows are nice. I find no need to upgrade, my 04 Outback kills deer no problem. I'm still a Mathews guy:) I never liked those poo poo twin cams. Mathews should come out with the "Buyback" They had the Outback and the Switchback. Buyback the old bows on trade ins towards new ones.

Back in sept, I had some extra 12-12-12 and did the drip line of my apple trees. Got plenty of rain. Man did it pay off. Almost ever tree is still holding apples! My neighbors who do not love their trees, as I do:D, have no more apples on their trees. I spent a lot of time pruning and liming the last few years. Time well spent as I see it. These trees have been gathering havens for deer. No big bucks yet..., but does draw bucks. I'll be waiting:D.

I have stalked flocks of birds that I KNEW were birds, not other hunters. I hunt family private land only, and I don't shoot at anything I don't confirm. Thanks for the safety tip. BTW welcome to the Realtree forums:).

OK, rifled slugs are for smoothbore shotguns, most of the time fired out of a modified barrel choke for best accuracy. Rifled slugs are referred to as Foster type slugs. Those should not be fired out of rifled slug barrels. Sabot type slugs should be used with rifled barrels.

I like look at trench dips or creek crossings with briars and hard hack bushes by the crossings. Horns pop off at these spots in late winter. NY woods are hard to hunt for sheds due to the fact of all the leaves that fall on the ground. When you find one be happy. When my son and I were in Texas last march, you could seew a shed from a mile away. Well not really a mile away, but you could see them without having to be on top of them. Spikehorn sheds are the hardest to find. Good Luck.

News about companies who stand behind their products are always good to hear. I have seen their products at gun shows and was always skeptical. This is good news. Glad it worked out John.

Buy it! A long action BAR with glass is worth over a grand. That is a good deal.

Hello, my name is Anthony and like others on this board... I love shooting does! Well, the only way I know how to deal with my doe-aholism is to go and shoot more does:p. I was up at camp this whole week and did some hard hunting. I only saw flatheads and small bucks. This doe tag I waited 3 years to get. I was denied 3 years in a row for this area and I finally got one this year. Tuesday morning on a drive one town over, she came past me at 50 yards and wammo. Another one of our party connected with another doe too on this drive. This is deer #5 for this house this year. My son Joe shot 3, a button, a doe and a spike and I took 2 doe. One in bow one in gun. We are not in short supply of meat over here. My oldset son has another doe tag for this area, so another will be falling this weekend hopefully. But the next deer will be donated to the venison donation program for the homeless. We are having a good year here.

More facts are coming out about the story. Sad no matter how you look at it. The hunter was using a .300WinMag. After wounding the deer, the 2nd, finishing shot, is the one what killed the child. The hunter was hunting over bait, illegal in NYS, he tagged a illegal buck, less than 3 points on one side. He was hunting over a salt lick, illegal in NYS and was less than the required footage from the residence. This guy was recipe for disaster. Look at how many laws he broke and to take the life of a innocent child too. He is being held without bail. There is a BIG cry now to ban the use of rifles in the county due to this incident. It has always been a rifle county and more counties this year in NYS changed to rifle also this year. Prayers for that little girl and her family.
