  1. Happy Birthday Son...I am quite proud of you.
  2. Thanks for the concern. Sandy passed by my home and without causing any damage. Up at deer camp we had more damage in the area. Lots of trees fallen and I was living off a generator for 6 days and showering at the local college. Not the worst thing in the world. I got out of NYC on Oct 26th. The storm came on the 30th. Thanks for asking Bug.
  3. A very wonderful thing you are doing helping those less fortunate.
  4. I hear ya John, but before I posted this... I ran this past a hunter ed instructor who knows the rules in and out. It was fair game being with the yotes. In retrospect...it is always what our parents tried to teach us. Be careful who you choose as friends.
  5. Hey gang...Been away at deer camp with no net access. I miss this place. Anyway... My neighbor has been hunting in a spot seldom gone into by humans. A swampy area that you have to dance on moss to get into. Opening day of NY's so zone gun opener. He sees 6 yotes go flying by before he has a chance to get gun up. Day later...Yotes chasing doe with 2 dogs that have bobbed tails in pack. He shoots lead dog...a coyote. My son Joe on right with yote that was skinned and going to the Texas Hill Country. Monday morning...same pack chasing spike buck. Guns up... he shoots dog with bobbed tail. Turns out it was a pit bull female. Chasing deer with yotes! Imagine if those breeds would have mated? Wow...No... I don't want to think about that. I was told the yotes let it in because it was a young breedable female. Possible. I am not a knoledgeable dog guy(possible dog folks?) But this one will not be breeding anytime soon. As the story spread around town. Many more have seen the dogs with bob tails chasing deer. This was one muscular dog that was very solid and heavy. Good riddance. This dog was fair game being teamed up with the coyotes. Some felt bad because it was a pet at some point. But it became feral and had to go.
  6. I have had deer close enough to touch while assembling my climbing stand in the dark. They seem to not be spooked by light. Green and red light less than white in my experience.
  7. Better call the Smithsonian...They have to make room. Ross...another piece of art! Enjoy the new knife and use it well.

    trapping

Havent put any sets out yet. Been chasing deer.
  11. The moose antler is very different. I like it. Never seen it before. That bites about your dog getting at the nasal cavity bones. No pun intended. Ben, for a more custom look. When I cut trees down(especially ones w good grain in them) I always cut about 6 wood disks(plaques 3/4"-1") to save down the road for antler mounting purposes. I leave the bark on stain/ seal them within a week or so the wood dont crack. Just a thought. I like the crab claw on the rack too!

How about a real good looking camel Corey?
  13. Wish that was case the case here Mike. Our neighborhood was one of the few that had power and we got ALL...and I mean ALL of the tick or treaters from the area. Ran out of candy fast. Had to shut lites and make it look like no one was home after that. We went through 5 lbs of candy! My sons stayed home last night. That made me happy. Halloween is trouble night.
  14. We always use Mr Yoshidas Gourmet sauce w a drop of liquid smoke for most about every meat to make our jerky. I use a 6 tray electric dehydrator. My savage kids devour it all in about a day. I have to hide it. Our jerky comes from the scraps we trim off deer and other other scraps someone wants to cut off the carcass.

    Sandy

Glad you werent affected much Mike except for power loss. We did OK here in Rockland. No damage, power out for short time. But in Sullivan, where I was. They took a BIG hit there. Wide spread power outages and down trees and lines all over. I was up at hunting camp and we lost power like Monday afternoon. I am sure glad I have a small generator that kept me powered up somewhat. I couldnt take 3 days of no shower so I came home today and will go back up tomorrow afternoon. I did luck out with the storm though. I didnt usually park my car where I usually do...A felled tree from my neighbors across the road would have crushed it. Is that luck or what? NYC and surrounding beach areas got hit really hard. Prayers and thoughts out to those folks.

    ouch

Ha! Your lucky you didnt sit on a fire ant nest in Texas! Ahhh...The things you learn while afield. Have fun and good luck.
  17. Freezer wrap and vacuum seal have made meat last a long time here. I like to date EVERY package that goes into the freezer. Unidentified and old stuff becomes trapping bait.
  18. Hope you held on to your hats over there Tim. Heard lake Ontario was really laying on a whoopin. Hope no major issues.

    Safety harness

I use a HSS vest type harness when I am in my Summit. Very easy to get on. I also wear a harness at work just about daily, and it is no way like the harness' we use at work. Wearing what I do at work, and then when I wear the HSS, it feels like I am not wearing a vest at all. I dont feel like the HSS will protect me like my harness does at work when I am 85' in the air. But I know they do tests and these products are proven. Keep in mind all... These vests and harness' ALL have a build and experation date on the tag. Most warranties expire on that date and the shock arresters that are sewn in(on hunting vests) deteriorate in that time. DO NOT USE A EXPIRED HARNESS OR SAFTEY BELT. Your life could depend on it. Replace it if it is old. Don't chance it guys.

    hey y'all

    Welcome to Realtree!
  21. Thats crazy Jeramie...You have a lot of patience. Big box stores have no interest with maintaining clientele because who you gonna go to? They practically eliminated mom and pop stores. I had a carpet experience with Lowes also 3 months ago. They came and measured my basement and gave my wife a price. She was about to make the purchase. Called me for approval. I asked if she went elsewhere for a price. She said no. That afternoon we went to a local carpet guy and they measured 80sq/ft less than what Lowes measured. I told Lowes to take a walk...Went with the local small guy...got a better deal because I was paying cash too.
  22. I use a Caldwell electronic ear muff, and occasionally use the throw away orange ones. Outside of hunting( that one shot)...I use ear protection all the time when shooting firearms.
  23. I have always burned mine flat. Knowing that heat rises and is needed to heat the pad and give off scent. Kind of makes sense that the heat going upward would cause a few issues. But John says he uses his exclusively vertical...Hmmm. The only I have had with them is like William said the striker goes bad. But they have made good on that when I sent it back.
  24. We do a lot of grilling here. I finally convinced the wife to use the grill to heat up and cook various other items instead of using the oven in the kitchen. The CFL's have been put in any space that could use them. No cost for them. Get the used/older ones from work. The only thing I cannot get a handle on here is the amount of showers the boys take. Leave for school, shower, home from school. Shower. Go to gym...come home shower. Sometimes the 19&16 year old take 4 showers a day! Between water, gas to heat the hot water, soap( we go through a lot here) and towels( which means more wash). That is a big expense that I cannot get them to slow down with. I am alone on this issue.
