How are the rest of the NYer's doing? I haven't been out since Sunday morning. Didn't hear any gobbles then. I will be out this weekend, suppose to rain. I have been having dreams of getting a turkey but they haven't been coming true, lol. And pre-calculus class is keeping me busy. Some season...

Today is onyl the second day of pre-calculus class. I feel like I will never get it. We are using the T1-83 calculator and are working on line equations and solving problems with functions and a bunch of other stuff. I am so scared I will fail, I have never been so worried. I am going to a help session today which hopefully will help me in getting the homework done that is due tomorrow but guys, I feel so confused! I haven't had math since 12th grade!

Re: Plant Species Inquery ???? Definitely not skunk cabbage. It is called Indian Poke or False Hellebore I believe. My mom found it in one of her books.

Re: What is going on!? Good luck outdoorgirl, get one for me,lol! I went out this morning, heard nothing. Went back home and slept for a few hours, lol. I am going to go out in the morning, hopefully hear something but who knows. I did find a few turkey feathers by a fox den which indicates to me the foxes are really hurting the turkey population, not just my mom's chickens. By the way outdoorgirl, I named my bird "Hoops",lol!

Re: Pluck or skin...?? I tried plucking one time... it is so much easier to just pull the skin and feathers off at the same time and the skin rips easily when you try to pluck anyway so that's what I do.

To all the hunting mothers on here and non-hunting mothers also! Have a wonderful day and remember your kids appreciate you even if they don't say it,lol!

Re: little girl loses pet bunny rabbit Poor kid...My sister and I raise rabbits. After this winter, we are down to 5 rabbits. My one rabbit died, she was really old, then one of my sister's died, possibly from snuffles(a cold), then I found another of my rabbits, dead under the duck house. We have ducks and she hopped out through a hole in her cage and they basically pecked her and killed her!

Re: What is going on!? Went out yesterday morning afetr hearing some turkeys scratching in the leaves the night before. Well those darn turkeys flew down and were in a field right above me. I found out because I walked up there later and found there tracks, poop, and scratchings. The poop looked more like hen if that is how you judge a hen from a gobbler, lol, but who knows. Yeah,I've been wondering if the gobblers aren't behind in gobbling or something, maybe that cold weatehr and snow we had turned them off. Any way, I slept in this morning, too tired to go out but I will be out in the morning. Good luck to the rest of you. Hey BuckNRut, where do you hunt in Allegany County?

I went out this morning and still did not hear any gobbles. There was a set of turkey tracks over yesterday's boot prints so a turkey came through sometime yesterday but I spooked a turkey walking out today that may be a lone hen wandering around. I'm going out later and going to sit where I saw that gobbler 2 weekends ago and see if he is hanging out in that area. I am so confused as to why the turkeys aren't gobbling at all. And they started logging on the other side of my hunting area so that means not hunting that spot. Some of youi n NY are hearing gobbles but in my area, not a thing..........any ideas?

Re: Your Opinion: Rompola Buck- Real/Fake? There are alot more things to worry about than a deer, lol. this guy, if the deer is fake, will have it on his conscience in God will deal with him in His time. If it is real, nice deer. For all you know, he didn't want to make a big deal of the deer due to people having their mounts stolen, I don't know and we won't know the exact answer but who cares, lol. Ok, some people do and that's alright:-)

Re: LOOK WHAT I FOUND THIS AM They sure are beautiful! I find them once in a while. They actually I believe one of the largest if notthe largest moth at least in North America. I think the bottom photo you have from the web is what I have seen.

Re: I have officially.... I figured I had to get at least 2000 posts. At least I'll be a moron in style! lol

Well here is a update for you all. I haven't heard any gobbles yet to this date. Well except the tom gobbling 2 weekends before the season. I am hoping it just has to do with the weather as each morning has been 20-30 degrees which makes it hard to sit still in one spor for a long time! I set-up this morning in an open swamp that has some willow shrubs in it, skunk cabbage, a few wet springs, and a muddy trail through the middle that I am seeing turkey tracks and poop in at a regular basis. I heard a hen this morning from this spot, no gobbles, but the hen did not come in like the one on the opener. I hope this means the hens have the toms busy or something. I know there are gobblers somewhere, no one has shot them all, but it is so hard to hunt when you don't know where the gobblers are exactly. What do you guys suggest I do until some gobbling happens? Should I stay in one area or move around? I have these next 5 days totally free to hunt then next Tuesday is my may term class so I will probably only be able to hunt weekends but if I roost a tom like last year, I'll hunt before class and hopefulyl not miss. I haven't seen any other hunters except for some boot tracks on one side of the property but I believe those guys went in onto property I don't hunt. This is tough but I'm trying to stay optimistic.

finished my junior year at college, yesterday I survived my last two final exams. I do have Pre-calculus to take for 3 weeks in May which will suck because I'll lose my weekday turkey hunting but oh well. I also have become the offical owner of a Team Realtree camo cap! LOL! I got one today at Walmart marked down to $5 - originally like $6.67 or something. So now, I am really a member, lol, or am I a moron?!

Yuppers, had 2 more finals today. Two left to go tomorrow and then I'm done with the semester. Well I have may term but oh well. I didn't get out turkey hunting today and won't tomorrow..for two reasons: with this cold, I have no energy and eventhough a day not hunting is a day lost, if I don't rest then I won't be ready for the 5-6 days of hunting beginning Wednesday. My other reason being I don't have a tom to hunt, lol, but hopefully tomorrow I might roost one. Wish me luck guys. I would so like to get one so mom can have wild turkey on Mother's Day Weather is suppose to get decent Wednesday also, compared to the SNOW I saw, ick!

Re: How are other NY\'s doing? I'm in Allegany county. except for having a hen calling after fly down but not coming to the field, I heard no gobbles either. If I feel well tonight, might take a walk up to the woods. Hopefulyl after tomorrow, I can find a tom to fill my tag, got 6 days off before may term classes.

Hey guys, a couple weekends ago I saw a gobbler in a field that I watched during the evening. He fed around and worked across the field to the other side of some woods. When I gave some hoots, he gobbled back and he would gobble back almost every time at the hoot. The thing is, he gobbled from about the same place, not on roost yet so I was wondering if this may be one of his strutting areas? I haven't been up to see if he is around, if he is still alive after the youth hunt and this weekend. I was thinking of maybe sitting in that area tonight to see if I hear him roost or gobble or anything. I don't even know of any strut zones around here because I haven't found any!

Re: FINALLY GOT TO GO! AND HAD LUCK! Nice bird Ryan, Congrats! I'm glad you finally got out!

Re: Been a while.. Farm pics inside Nice barn and nice looking cows! You should be proud of your work. Around my area, there is this really big time farmer. His farm is like in another town, he owns fields in alot of towns, buys out small farms, and is just in it for the money. His cows don't look as nice either, though he chops all their tails off and he has like several hundred. I like small farms, not giant ones, lol.

Re: Horrible opening morning Thanks guys, you all are what makes this a great forum:) I was going to go out tonight to a difefrent spot where I think a gobbler might be, but with this cold I decided to take a break and save my engery for the morning. It might be raining in the morning so I'm going to stick by the fields but I have a final exam at 10:30am so I have to call it quits around 9. I'll keep you all up to date.

Have any of you had or have a professor or professors that have made an impact on you? Tomorrow is probably the last time I will see one of my professors (final exam) as the phys.ed/recreation department is "letting go" her and one of the phys.ed professors. She is truly an oustanding Christian example. She made classes easy and fun yet she challenged you to think and "step outside the box". When asked to talk about what we thought on something, her saying is "You can change your mind in 10 seconds or 10 minutes." She is a Therapeutic Recreation professional, her passion lying with the disabled. It is a shame the college is letting her go because she has made an impact on myself and others. She is special also because when you are in her class, she has the role of professor but she is like a long lost friend. She always teases me about being so quiet in class, lol. There is no right or wrong answer in her class and in all of her classes I've had, we've never needed a textbook . Thank you Professor Markell (I doubt she'll see this, lol) and thankyou to the other professors/teachers (like Tominator and anyone else) who go beyond being just a professor.

Well guys, I may sound really wimpy but I am bummed. It has beened a year and a half without filling a tag and this morning, the opener in NY, I heard no gobbles and saw no gobblers! I set up in the corner of a field near a ridge that turkeys like, had a hen calling in the woods to my right but she didn't come into the field or even towards me. I'm not sure if she had a gobbler with her or what but I wouldn't know! I got to this spot at 4:30am and when I was too cold, I took a walk at 7am. I walked some fields then returned and dropped over the ridge to an open bottom next to a different corn field. Sat there for about an hour and nothing! I came home at 10am, feeling really bummed. I don't know whether to give up or keep trying. I'll try to go upback tonight and see if I can find that gobbler I saw a couple weekends ago. How'd everyone else do? By the way I saw no other hunters except for some track on a logging path near another property line. I did hear some gun shots around the area, not on the land I hunt though, but hearing gun shots is depressing enough...

Re: Got a turkey! Wow, I probably would have been running after that guy. Here's my story, lol! So my sister and I are driving back from college one day when I see some blak sitting on the edge of the road and there is something red on it. We get closer and I say "It's a turkey and it has an arrow stuck out of it!" We stop the car and get out, to find this turkey does not have an arrow with red fletching but a broken wing. It hobbles away from us and we start running after it. It heads towards this hedgerow and my sis goes on one side, I on the other. Here we are running through the snow after this injured turkey. My sister trips on a tree root and lands face first in the snow. I cut across the hedgerow and throw my jacket on top of the turkey which got stuck in a bush. We proudly carry our "trophy" to the car and then home. It did become dinner for us one evening.

So yesterday about 4pm I took my owl and crow call and moved very slowly through my hunting area, but got not response from gobblers, the only responses I got were from real crows! I basically did a lope of my hunting area and saw a turkey crossing a field but it was quite a distance away and even with my little binocs., I couldn't tell if it was a hen or gobbler but I think it was a hen. Well I tried to circle around amd get in front of it to get a better look but it was gone. I headed up this field towards home, turned around then heard flapping behind me and there went the turkey! I didn't see a beard so maybe I'm ok,lol. Anyway I wanted to go out this morning but I have a cold and my mom wouldn't let me so maybe I'll make it tonight. My question is, right now it is raining and will be doing so for alot of the day. Are turkeys going to be in the fields before they roost and are they going to be roosting near the fields tonight? Since I haven't located a gobbler, I am planning on setting up in the corner of this field where I saw a hen one time and is alos below that ridge. Hopefully even a jake will come by. I was also wondering how long do you guys think I should give a field before moving on to another field? On the other side of this ridge is an unplowed corn field that I saw turkey sign in weeks ago and after the first field, I'll probably drop over the ridge to the other field but I don't want to miss turkeys coming out of the other field. I know, I've asked alot of questions. Maybe now I just have to "hunt" and wait for the Lord to bless me. Good luck to everyone this weekend!
