The shotgun buck dry spell is over!!!! (pics)
Turkeygirl replied to Turkeygirl's topic in Deer Hunting
Thanks everyone! I thought that as well 92...lots of similarity to the 9 from last year. Took my bow buck to the taxidermist tonight and going to get my gun buck caped out and get him there tomorrow or sometime this week. What a season! -
What an unreal morning...I FINALLY broke my dry spell of no buck with shotgun....I was blessed again....with taking a lovely 10 POINT BUCK!!!!! I was in a ladder stand that was within 100 yards of the stand where I shot my bow buck. I had great views and shooting into a corn field in front of me and to the right. It got light out and about 10 - 7am I catch movement and here comes a deer walking the field edge, he turns into the woods up ahead of me and I see antlers! I get my scope on him and he's got his nose to the ground. i give him a "meeehhh" He stops, I had to lean over a little to get around a tree and BOOM! He jumps way high in the air, thought "Ok, got him hit good" He takes a few leaps then stops and walks and stops in front of me about 25 yards My scope is on him, I see no exit wound or blood, I put a second shot on him, slightl quartering towards me and he DROPS in his tracks!! I was in complete shock....2 big bucks in a hunting season....this is unreal....and it's a little more special being my Uncle passed away a year ago today, He knew I loved hunting so this is his buck....Oh man...I was going to do a Euro with him since the bow I'm getting mounted...but now I'm not sure. We haven't caped him yet, he's hanging in a tree outside cleaned, our root cellar is full of the other buck. Praise God for another blessing....He is too good to me!

I am so fortunate and blessed...Yesterday was the 2nd to last day of our archery season....and here's the story and pics for you! Was hunting a ladder stand that I've been hunting this last week, had a trail cam set up on a scrape nearby. Same stand I shot that small buck twice last weekend and could never find him. About 8:15am a small 6 came in directly at me, could not draw bck, he walked right up to the stand, looked up at me turned and trotted off, stopped around 20 yards quartering away, I drew back and my nerves got me and I didn't settle the pin and shot over his back! Well I decide I'm going to sit until at least 10am and will still have time to do barn chores and get ready for work. I'm sitting there thinking about the miss and tell myself it just wasn't meant to be when I hear the crunch crunch sound of foots steps in the leaves. I look up ahead of me up an old logging road (the ladder stand is set basically where 3 paths intersect) and I see a deer working it's way to me. I stand up and get prepared and I decided to draw early and be ready. He comes around the bend on the trail and I see antlers but didn't pay attention to size or anything and as he turns I let out a "meeehhhh", he stops, I settle the pin on his shoulder and let it fly, THWACK! He jumps, turns up on this bank, falls on an old fence, snaps the wire, gets up and turns and runs down the road that goes about 2 feet from the stand and I see he's got a HUGE rack! I also saw when he had fallen that my fletching was burried right up in him. I start shaking and sputtering "Oh my gosh...oh my gosh....oh Lord please let him go down". He veers off in the wood, I can hear him breathing then a minute or so later I hear a crash. I get down, check the shot site, there's blood, then I go back to the car, drive home which is like 1/4 mile up the road, unload some gear, pick-up my mom because I said there is no way if I go him I can get him in the car myself and the plan is load him on the dolley and I'll ride in the car (Kia sportage) and hold the dolley up and she can drive....lol....that or I'l lcall our neighbor we hunt with. We go back and I start tracking...bright red blood with air bubbles....where he veered off I find a couple saplings soaked in blood...I'm feeling confident, he turnes left, blood covered leaves then there he is, resting up against a large tree, dead as can be and a monster of a buck....After a few pics by my mom (mainly all blurry except one or two and the best one was on self timer), I hauled the beast out which took forever, drove the kia up to the woods edge, got him strapped to the dolley and my mom drove up the road with me holding the dolley. Praise the Lord....I was not expecting a 2nd big archery buck...what a blessing...and on the 2nd to last day of the season! I think I'm going to get him mounted....right now the hide and head are in a bag on the cold cement floor in our garage - anyone know how long I have to get it to a taxidermist?

Way to go Mandy!

Don't overlook Hornady SSTs. I shoot those out of my Mossberg 20 ga with a rifled barrel and they shoot great and put deer down!

WTG! great recovery!

Congrats on the job and congrats on the awesome buck!!!

Good luck Tim, keep us posted!!

Holy cow Lil....you are blessed, I hope you know that! Wow, that femur fracture takes the cake! Take it easy and don't rush, let things heal, you have the future to hunt and you don't want to mess it up rushing too soon in the healing process! Keep us updated on your recovery!

Congrats Mrswtn on an awesome buck!!!
-
Haven't been in the stand for a week now but I've seen alot of deer in fields on the drive home from work at night....activity should be picking up.
-
We age our deer at least a week before butchering...but our venison only lasts a year at most in our freezer....we eat ALOT of venison.
-
Sounds like you need to back it down. I have my bow at 53 pounds, hadn't shot in a week, finally got out yesterday to shoot and no problem pulling it back....just my shot excution is what gets me sometimes. I never have any problems if it sits around for months.

Wow....what a buck Tim! I shot a doe one year during shotgun season....thankfully there was snow on the ground....I followed just drops of blood for a few hundred yards till i caught up to her, made a head shot to finish her. Well my first shot was just in front of the one shoulder, hit lung...she was just plain tough. If it wasnt' for snow, I may not have found her. -
Have a 3 day weekend coming up and the weather looks great! I plan to be hunting hard!
-
Go back and start circling the area....this is why I don't hunt in the rain...drizzle is ok, actual rain I won't hunt because I don't want to risk losing a deer, even on a good shot!
-
I personally doubt it would be the Amish....if they are anything like the Amish that live around me, they abide by strong Biblical principlesand is not of their nature to harm someone else....

Congrats! My first deer I got with a bow was hit back and hit the femoral artery...blood everywhere....Not a pretty a shot but glad you recovered her!

I was working last night - probably around 8 or so we lost power and the hospital generator kicked on...the entire town was black. Then around 10 the generator quit for about a minute and I was standing in radiology and everything was pitch black until the PA came waltzing down the hall with his flashlight, lol. I guess some type of power surge or something so when the generator came back on, the phones in the entire building were dead for a little bit. Drive home wasn't too horrible. Never lost power at home...
-
I dunno but I've been having fun getting rid of them, lol
