  1. Sam--I have planted a lot of different seed blends---name brands and just regular seeds purchased at the co-op. I have never planted a seed that did not germinate. Now I have planted some that the deer never touched but the seeds germinated and the plants looked great.
  2. looks like we are have a good chance of rain this weekend. Hopefully it will perk up. When did you plant this clover. If it was planted this spring then there is a good chance it will not survive. If it was planted last fall or prior then the roots will probably be deep enough for a recover this fall.
  3. rye grain, like wtnhunt suggested, is a good choice. I've had good luck with red clover in remote low sunlight areas. I'll take a rake and clean as much of the debris off the ground and kind of scratch up the surface--then broadcast it right after or even better during a good rain or on muddy ground when more rain is expected. The rain will help cover the seed giving better germination. You won't have much luck if you just toss the seed on dead leaves and branches. best of luck with your plot todd
  4. It's time to get ready for the annual NFL Pick'em contest again. If you are interested in playing just sign up on this thread. Muggs and BB11 are going to organize it and pick the games this year. In the past I picked 10 games (9 Sunday game and the Monday Night game). All you do is pick the winner. Scores will be totaled for the entire season and then there will be a playoff during the playoffs all the way to the Super Bowl. Good luck to all todd Muggs and BB11--thanks for helping me out this year.
  5. I was just thinking this weekend that I need to get this thing started. I'm sorry guys I haven't been on much lately. My partner at the clinic has been pretty sick and I have been having to cover a few extra shifts and taking over a lot of his cases. Muggs has graciously offered to get the thing started. I'll go ahead and get a thread started and pinned for people to start signing up. take care todd
  6. i always keep my mineral licks stocked--but you are correct--most usage is during the spring and summer.
  7. This happened in the town that I grew up in--Noble. I have been sick about this all weekend. There is no excuse for what this officer did--and if any of us did this we would be sitting behind bars right now--and believe it or not the officer is on PAID leave right now. A family is burying their 5 year old son. If this was my child--I would want that officer to spend the rest of his life in jail. IMO at the minimum negligent homicide charges should be filed.
  8. i have planted triticale in a mix. It is a rye/wheat hybrid. Unless you can get it cheaper than wheat or rye I wouldn't chose it over either of the other two. I couldn't really tell that it did any better than wheat or rye. You can purchase quality wheat seed for 10 bucks a 50. I personally wouldn't pay much more than that for the triticale--just don't think there is any more of a benefit--JMO though. todd
  9. COOL--keep us updated with the progress.
  10. What a great coach. For sure a sad day for football!
  11. lot's of wildlife enjoying those soybeans. Are those the ones you got from Soybeanman?
  12. Illusion ShortReed---easy call to blow that comes with a great instructional CD for less than 30 bucks at Bass pro.
  13. What is your 40 acres like? Do you have any real heavy cover on it--if so try to create a sanctuary where the deer feel very safe. If you don't have a sanctuary then you're not going to hold any deer on your property. I've never deer hunted on public land so can't help you out there.
  14. you look like a natural. Awesome looking plots!
  15. Great video---the only thing missing is a good dog.
  16. wow--i thought this was a World Series Pick thread and it took me 20 minutes to read it Detroit!
  17. Ok--I started draining my waterfowl pond about a month ago and it's already filled up twice since draining due to the huge rains we have had. I go out about twice a week and scatter jap millet and milo on the wet shoreline. I just walk the shoreline and throw the seed into the mud as hard as I can. Wears out my arm so I hope it is worth it. Unfortunately I've lost quite a bit of seed due to the pond filling back up. The seed would germinate then a big rain would occur and drown the small seeds. Here are some pics of how it is doing so far: Here is a shoreline along the dam--you can see the millet/milo coming up pretty good: I planted the dam around the first of May with a deer wildlife mix. Two fold here--one to provide forage for deer but also to provide some tall cover to use as a natural blind for duck season. With this situation I can hunt anywhere on the dam and have plenty of cover for myself and Belle. I can hunt just about any wind from the dam except for a straight west wind. Here is a pic of the body of the pond. I just seeded the wet the soil today so hopefully it will take. The newly germinated millet/milo was planted about a week ago. My second attempt since I lost my first attempt. Here are a few more random pics. Hope the ducks like it! todd
  18. I'd wait and plant a nice cool seaon annual mix. These are pounds per acre: 25# Wheat 25# Rye Grain 25# Oats 10# Austrian Winter Peas 5# Brassica Mix (Rape, Purple Top Turnips) This will start attracting deer quickly and stay green all winter!!
  19. Sure we do--I could neuter Bill's dog and you could paint his house--then we'd be RT employees.
